THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
166-Wu-Tang Clan-Gravel Pit.
2000-Number 6 single.
Best Bit-At 0.25.When Hip-Hop made sense,not cents.
The Wu-Tang Clan were formed in 1991 in New York City, they are critically acclaimed with ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine calling them ‘the best Rap group ever,’in 2004 ‘NME’ magazine hailed them as one of the most influential groups of the last ten years.Band members RZA and The ODB chose the groups name as a tribute to the 1983 Hong Kong martial arts film ‘Shaolin and Wu Tang.’
Gravel Pit is taken from the bands third studio Album ‘The W’ released in the year 2000 and to date is their only UK top 40 single. The female vocals are provided by Paulissa Moorman and the three verses are performed by Method Man,(see also best songs 359) Ghostface Killah and U-God,other spoken parts are provided by RZA and Raekwon. THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
167-The Smiths-What Difference Does It Make.?
1984-Number 12 single.
Best Bit-At 2.39.It would have been useful to have hired The Bee Gees for this bit.
The character Ray Smith in the Jack Kerouac novel ‘The Dharma Burns’ repeatedly says ‘What difference does it make?’ as well as ‘Pretty girls make graves,’ which is also the title of another song on The Smiths self titled debut Album.
The song is about being rejected by a close friend after they find out a secret about you. There have always been strong rumours that The Smiths front man Morrissey is singing about how he was snubbed by a friend after revealing that he was gay.
As usual the music was written by Johnny Marr with lyrics by Morrissey(see also best songs 940-673 and 222,) who has stated his distaste for the song. Morrissey has said ‘The song is musically interesting but lyrically it is very….Simon Le Bon. I find the lyrics facile and mildly embarrassing.’
‘All men have secrets and here is mine.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
168-Plastic Ono Band-Give Peace A Chance.
1969-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 0.34.When Lennon saw television footage of nearly half a million anti-Vietnam War protesters singing this song outside the White House in November 1969,he considered it to be ‘one of the biggest moments of my life.’
As the Vietnam War was taking place in 1969 John Lennon(see also best songs 927-599-473-456-319-238 and 218) and his wife Yoko Ono held a ‘Bed-In’ for peace in The Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal,Canada. The idea was for Lennon and Ono to attract as much publicity as possible for their agenda which was the promotion of making peace, not war. They invited several influential celebrities and members of the press to join them in their hotel bedroom during the eight day peaceful protest.
It was during that time that ‘Give Peace A Chance’ was recorded, some of the people in the hotel room who sang or played on the song included The Smothers Brothers,Timothy Leary,Allen Ginsberg and Petula Clark. After the live recording had been made it was taken to the studio, where the finishing touches were completed.
‘All we are saying is give peace a chance.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
169-James P. Johnson-Charleston.
1923-Has never charted in the UK,there was no chart until 1952.
Best Bit-At 0.31.The older generation always dislike the music that the current generation enjoy,I wonder what an Edwardian would have made of this outrageous song and dance.
‘Charleston’ was composed by James P. Johnson(1894-1955,) with lyrics by Cecil Mack(1873-1944.) The song was written to accompany the new dance craze called ‘The Charleston’ and was first featured in the American black Broadway musical comedy show ‘Runnin’ Wild’ which had its premiere at the New Colonial Theatre in New York on October 29.1923.The vocal version was first performed by Elisabeth Welch(1904-2003,) but generally the song is mostly performed as an instrumental.
James P. Johnson was one of the most important pianists in the evolution of popular music who bridged the gap between the ‘Ragtime’ and ‘Jazz’ eras.He is known for being the inspiration for legends such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
170-AC/DC-Highway to Hell.
1979-Number 56 single.The song also reached Number 4 in 2013.
Best Bit-At 0.52.It’s a lot easier travelling down the Highway to Hell than it is climbing the Stairway to Heaven.
In 2013 in an effort to stop those pesky people from the X-Factor from getting yet another Xmas Number 1 this song was chosen as an alternative and a country wide promotion was set into action with the song reaching Number 4 on downloads.Up until then AC/DC(see also best songs 797 and 245) had achieved 21 top 40 singles, without ever reaching the top 10,their previous best had been ‘Heatseeker’ which made Number 12 in 1988.
Highway to Hell was the nickname for the Canning Highway in Australia. It runs from where lead singer Bon Scott lived in Fremantle and ends at a pub called The Raffles, which was a big Rock ‘N’ Roll drinking venue. As Canning Highway gets close to the pub it dips into a steep decline. Many people were killed by driving fast over the intersection at the top of the hill and that is why it is called highway to hell.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
174-CeeLo Green-F**k You.
2010-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 3.01.Both versions tell the same story, but the clean version does it in a more gentlemanly manner.
‘F**k You,’ or ‘Forget You’ as it is alternatively known was co-written by CeeLo Green and the songwriting team of Bruno Mars,Philip Laurence and Ari Levine who collectively called themselves The Smeezingtons,
CeeLo Green was born Thomas DeCarlo Callaway on May 30,1975 in Atlanta,Georgia,U.S.,his first success came as a member of the ‘Southern Hip-Hop’ group Goodie Mob in the 1990’s.In 2006 he teamed up with Brian Burton better known by his stage name ‘Danger Mouse,’under the name of Gnarls Barkley they recorded the Billboard and UK Number 1,’Crazy.’
You may think that this songs subject is about someones advances being rejected but Green has revealed the songs real subject.’I did ‘F..k You’ to be an a..hole,to be spiteful towards my record label,Electra Records,it had taken about three years to do ‘The Lady Killer'(Album) and I just felt that after recording almost 70 songs I could not please them.’
‘See you driving ’round town with the girl I love and I’m like forget you.’
