Best Bit-At 2.29.The inspiration for this song my friend,is Blowin’ in the Wind.
Sam Cooke wrote this as a protest song to support the civil rights movement.Up to this point most of his songs were middle of the road lighthearted uptempo tunes or romantic ballads, but after hearing Bob Dylan’s ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ he became inspired and couldn’t believe it wasn’t written by a black man.
Some of the lyrics were derived from an incident at a motel in Shreveport,Louisiana where Cooke and some of his friends were turned away for being black.Cooke felt that it was time for him to write a protest song as he felt ashamed he hadn’t done so already.
Sam Cooke(January 22,1931-December 11,1964) was known as the ‘King of Soul,’just some of the artists who were inspired by him include Stevie Wonder,Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding,he has also been called ‘The inventor of Soul Music.’
Cooke died at the age of 33 from a gunshot wound to the chest,Bertha Franklin who shot him claims it was in self defence, while Cook’s acquaintances vehemently deny that story.
‘It’s been a long,a long time coming,but I know a change is gonna come,oh yes it will.’
