‘Charleston’ was composed by James P. Johnson(1894-1955,) with lyrics by Cecil Mack(1873-1944.) The song was written to accompany the new dance craze called ‘The Charleston’ and was first featured in the American black Broadway musical comedy show ‘Runnin’ Wild’ which had its premiere at the New Colonial Theatre in New York on October 29.1923.The vocal version was first performed by Elisabeth Welch(1904-2003,) but generally the song is mostly performed as an instrumental.
James P. Johnson was one of the most important pianists in the evolution of popular music who bridged the gap between the ‘Ragtime’ and ‘Jazz’ eras.He is known for being the inspiration for legends such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
