‘If I Were A Rich Man’ is one of the songs featured in the 1964 musical ‘Fiddler On The Roof.’It was written by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock(1928-2010.)The song is performed by the musicals lead character ‘Tevye,’ a poor Jewish dairyman on the brink of being evicted from his village in early 1900’s Russia.Actor Zero Mostel who originated the role of Tevye on Broadway in 1964,first introduced the song.
Chaim Topol first played the part of Tevye in the 1966 Israeli production of Fiddler On The Roof and this led to him being chosen for the 1971 film version. Topol was 36 years old at the time but was made to look 20 years older and 30 pounds heavier with makeup and costuming.
Fiddler On The Roof was based on a book written by Joseph Stein(1912-2010,) who in turn had taken his inspiration from the writings of Sholem Aleichem(1859-1916)
‘I see my wife,Golde,looking like a rich man’s wife,with a proper double chin.’
