Best Bit-At 3.05.Phil Spector was a perfectionist and made Tina Turner(see also best songs 752 and 485) sing the song over and over for several hours in the studio until he thought he had the perfect vocal.Turner recalled,’I must have sung that 500.000 times.I was drenched in sweat.I had to take my shirt off and stand in my bra to sing.’
Spector(see also best songs 782 and 737) was so sure the song would be massive that he paid ‘Lorma Records’ $20,000 ($154,441 today) for them to promote the song and a further $22.000 (169,885 today) to record it with 21 session musicians and 21 background vocalists. In the States the song did not live up to expectations and stalled at Number 88 on Billboard. Spector was so disillusioned that he retired from the music industry for the next two years. He has said that he thinks this song was his greatest work.He shares the songwriting credits with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich,(see also best songs 820-331 and 262.)
