THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
196-Leonard Cohen-Suzanne.
1967-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit At-1.00.In 1967 Cohen had become disillusioned with his lack of financial success as a writer,so he decided to go to America to pursue a career as a Folk music singer/songwriter and for that we all say ‘Hallelujah.’
Leonard Cohen was born September 21,1934 in Montreal,Quebec,Canada,he died November 7,2016 at the age of 82.
‘Suzanne’ started out life as a poem Cohen wrote in 1966,it first gained recognition when recorded by Judy Collins in the same year.Cohen recorded his version of the song for his debut Album ‘Songs Of Leonard Cohen’ released in 1967,it was also his debut single.
The songs lyrics were inspired by Cohen’s platonic relationship with a dancer called Suzanne Verdal. Cohen reminisces of the times they spent together by the harbour in Montreal and the walks they would take around Old Montreal past the church of Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours where sailors were blessed before heading out to sea.
‘And you want to travel with her and you want to travel blind.’
