Many songs (and some feature in this countdown) hold claims to being the very first ever Rock ‘N’ Roll song and this one has very strong claims. The songs writer Arthur Smith was born in 1921 in Clinton,South Carolina,he died in 2014.Smith created this ‘new sound’ from ‘Boogie-Woogie,’ a style of music that developed in African-American communities in the 1870’s,but became very popular in the 1920’s.Boogie Woogie was always played on the piano but Smith’s use of a guitar as lead instrument led to a new genre of music that would become known as ‘Hillbilly Boogie.’
In 1959 Bert Weedon(1920-2012) recorded his version of the song and renamed it ‘Guitar Boogie Shuffle,’he became the first British guitarist to have a UK top ten single. In 1957 Weedon had written a book about learning to play the guitar, the book was called ‘Play A Day,’it went on to become a major influence on many leading British musicians including John Lennon,Paul; McCartney,Brian May,Eric Clapton,Pete Townshend and many, many more.
