The Stooges were an American Rock band formed in 1967 in Ann Arbor,Michigan by singer Iggy Pop,guitarist Ron Asheton, drummer Scott Asheton and bassist Dave Alexander.Even though they initially achieved very little commercial success with their first two Albums they are regarded as one of the most influential bands of all time and a precursor to Punk Rock.
Their self titled debut Album released in 1969 was produced by John Cale OBE who was a founding member of the Velvet Underground(see also best songs 401.)
‘No Fun’ was covered by the Sex Pistols in 1977 as the ‘B’ side of their single Pretty Vacant, bringing the song to the attention of a whole new generation.
Iggy Pop(see also best songs 701) the bands flamboyant lead singer and frontman is the only surviving member of the original lineup. His on stage act included smearing himself in peanut butter,or sometimes raw meat and occasionally revealing his genitalia,he is also generally regarded as the person who invented ‘stage diving.’
