She is regarded as the ‘most trailblazing artist’ of her Pop generation and a major influence on such artists as Katy Perry and Rihanna. In turn she states Madonna and Joni Mitchell as her inspirations.
‘Get The Party Started’ was written and produced by Linda Creed,the former lead singer with the band 4 Non Blondes.
Creed is a prolific songwriter,her other two best known hits are ‘Beautiful’ for Christina Aguilera and ‘What You Waiting For’ by Gwen Stefani.
In 2006 Shirley Bassey recorded the song for an advert for Marks and Spencer,it was so popular that she released it as a single it peaked at Number 47 in 2007 making Bassey the first female to have hits over a 50 year period on the UK chart.Her first hit was ‘The Banana Boat Song’ reaching Number 8 in 1957.

Best Bit-At 4.14.They took their name from the title of a 1945 film called ‘Swing Out Sister,’ an American musical comedy.They claim they chose the name because it was the only one they could all agree on,in that they all hated it.
Swing Out Sister started out life as a trio of Martin Jackson,Andy Connell and Corinne Drewery,together with their producer Paul Staveley O’Duffy theysigned with Mercury Records in 1985.
After the release of their debut Album ‘It’s Better To Travel’Jackson left and they have been a duo ever since,using many different session musicians for their eleven studio Albums to date,the latest being the 2017 release ‘Almost Persuaded.’
Their musical style is very much influenced by the Pop and Easy Listening sounds of the 1960’s.You could say they were Bacharach and David for the 1980’s.

Best Bit-At 2.20.Romeo and Juliet is Mark Knopfler’s ‘Play’ on words.
Mark Knopfler OBE was born on the 12th August 1949 in Glasgow,but was raised near Newcastle upon Tyne. He was the lead guitarist,lead singer and songwriter for the Rock band Dire Straits(see also best songs 829) between 1977-1995.
The song is based on Mark Knopfler’s own real life experience of falling in love as a young man.He was dating a girl called Holly Vincent and he felt he was being used by her so she could further her own musical career.
In the song the couple are called Romeo and Juliet which of course is a reference to the William Shakespeare play. Knopfler also makes a point of mentioning other works involving young love,including the songs ‘Somewhere,’ from West Side Story,which is itself based on the Shakespeare play and also the 1963 song from the American girl group The Angels,’My Boyfriends Back.’

‘Both Sides Now’ was written around 1966 by Canadian singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell(see also best songs 637 and 558,) she was inspired to write the song after reading the 1959 novel by Saul Bellow,’Henderson The Rain King.’It first appeared on her Album ‘Joni Mitchell Live at the Second Fret 1966.’
The first commercially released version was this one from American Folk singer Judy Collins,appearing on her 1967 Album ‘Wildflowers.’It became a Billboard hit single in 1968 and charted in the UK in 1970.
The song is about seeing things from a different perspective as you grow from a child into an adult.It also says that not only people you know change over time,but you do yourself as well.

This song is filed under the genre of ‘Big Beat’ music,which normally consists of heavy and distorted drum beats,synthesizers and sampled loops of 1960’s and 1970’s Funk,Soul,Jazz and Rock music.Other successful acts of Big Beat include The Prodigy(see also best songs 925) and Fatboy Slim(see also best songs 760.)
The drums on this track sample a song called ‘Changes’ by Bernard Purdie,the opening bass riff resembles the guitar intro from the Pink Floyd song ‘Let There Be More Light’ and the vocals are sampled from ‘Gucci Again’ a 1989 song from Schoolly D who is recognised as the first ever ‘Gangsta Rapper.’

WHAT ARE THE BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER?
I have never seen a best song list that mixes every genre of music into one countdown,so this is what I am attempting to do.
Obviously I have not heard every song that has ever been recorded but I do make the effort to listen to as many different genres as possible.
In this countdown I cover the very best of all the music recorded in the last 100 years,from the Crooners of the 1920’s to the Thrash Metal of the Noughties.

301-Link Wray & His Ray Men-Rumble.
1954-Has never charted in the UK.
Best Bit-At 1.10.Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction.This song was banned from being played on the radio.’IT’S AN INSTRUMENTAL!’
The reason it was banned was because ‘rumble’ was a slang term for a gang fight and it was feared that the songs harsh sound glorified juvenile delinquency.
The song can be heard at it’s most ‘menacing’ in a scene from the Pulp Fiction film during a scene between John Travolta and Uma Thurman.
‘Rumble’ was a groundbreaking song as it used the then new techniques of guitar distortion and feedback and led the way towards Rock ‘N’ Roll and Rock Music.
Bob Dylan has referred to the song as ‘the best instrumental ever’ and Pete Townshend said that after hearing the song it made him want to pick up a guitar.
Fred Lincoln ‘Link’ Wray Jr was born in Dunn,North Carolina,The United States on May 2,1929 and died in Copenhagen,Denmark on November 5,2005,he was 76.

‘Boys Keep Swinging’ is taken from David Bowie’s 13th studio Album,his last release of the 1970’s and the last of the so called ‘Berlin Trilogy,'(‘Low’ from 1977 and ‘Heroes’ also from 1977 being the other two.)
For this song Bowie(see also best songs 807 and 440) was looking for a garage band sound and at the suggestion of Brian Eno got guitarist Carlos Alomar to play the drums and drummer David Davis to play bass,Simon House(see also best songs 577) played the violin.
Bowie has said of the song,’I do not feel that there is anything remotely glorious about being either male or female.I was merely playing on the idea of the colonisation of gender.’

Cabell Calloway(December 25,1907-November 18,1994) was born in Rochester,New York,he was an American Jazz singer and bandleader.
He was an energetic performer as you can see from watching this 1958 video,he also appeared in thirteen films between 1932-1980 when his final starring role was singing this song in ‘The Blues Brothers’ movie,introducing himself and his music to a whole new generation.
‘Minnie The Moocher’ was co-written by Calloway and Irving Mills(see also best songs 370) and is famous for it’s ‘call and response.’Calloway would sing a line and the audience would repeat it,then Calloway would sing(‘scat’) faster,making it more complicated for the audience to replicate.
‘Folks here’s a story ’bout Minnie the Moocher,she was a red hot hoochie coocher.

Elena Goulding was born on the 30th December,1986 in Hereford,England.To date she has released three studio Albums,’Lights,'(2010) ‘Halcyon,'(2012) and ‘Delirium'(2015.) Her twenty UK top 40 hits(at the time of writing) include the two Number 1’s ‘Burn'(2013) and ‘Love Me Like You Do'(2015.)
‘Anything Could Happen’ was co-written and produced by Goulding and Jim Eliot who has also had success with Kylie Minogue,Will Young and Olly Murs.
The song is about not taking anything for granted,it tells us to live for today because tomorrow isn’t promised. Goulding said ‘It’s a song of realisation. I’m hoping it will make people go out and propose to their girlfriends or go on that holiday they never ended up doing.’
