THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
278-N-Trance-Set You Free.
1994-Number 39 single.When re-issued in 1995 it reached Number 2 and again when re-issued in 2001 it peaked at Number 4.
Best Bit-At 4.22.Because they made one of the best dance songs of the 1990’s I think we can forgive them for some horrendous cover versions.
N-Trance were formed in 1990 by Kevin O’Toole and Dale Longworth after meeting at Oldham College, they both shared an interest in making Electronic Dance Music. In search of a vocalist they were recommended to a then 19 year old Kelly Llorenna who sings the vocals on this track which was first recorded as far back as 1992,with only 500 12inch vinyl copies made for promotional use.
The song was inspired by a night out in ‘The Hacienda’ in Manchester that Kevin O’Toole recalled,’They used to pass round pints of water and a woman came up to me and I felt her heartbeat through her top.The song created a diary of what was happening at the time.’
‘When I hold you baby, feel your heartbeat close to me,want to stay in your arms forever only love can set you free.’

279-Perez Prado-Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White.
1955-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 0.03.Perez Prado may have written Mambo No 5,but this was definitely Mambo’s Number 1 song.
Mambo music developed as a genre in Cuba in the mid to late 1930’s and took off in the United States in the 1940’s.The main protagonist for the development and popularity of Mambo was Perez Prado(December 11,1916-September 14th,1989,) he was known as ‘The King Of Mambo.’The most successful song he wrote was Mambo No 5 which gave Lou Bega a UK Number 1 in 1999 and did the same for the animated character Bob The Builder in 2001.
Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White was written in 1950 by the Spanish composer Louis Gugliemi. French lyrics for the song were written by Jacques Larue and English ones by Mack David, brother of Hal.
Prado recorded his version for use in the 1955 film ‘Underwater!’ starring Jane Russell, the song spent 10 weeks at Number 1 on Billboard. In the UK the song spent two weeks at the top with the competing version from British trumpeter Eddie Calvert achieving four weeks.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
280-Pink Floyd-Another Brick In The Wall.(Part 2.)
1979-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 2.17.They say school days are meant to be the best days of your life.
The bands first single release in 11 years became the Xmas Number 1 of 1979,as well as the last Number 1 of the 1970’s.
Another Brick In The Wall is a protest song,it is a three part composition on Pink Floyd’s 1979 Album ‘The Wall.'(see also best songs 992.) All three parts were written by the bands bassist Roger Waters. He based the song on his own personal experience of life at a grammar school in the 1950’s.
The lyrics attracted controversy. The Inner London Education Authority described the song as ‘scandalous’ and it was also rumoured that Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher ‘hated it.’
Waters explained ‘You couldn’t find anybody in the world more pro-education than me,but the education I went through in a boys’ grammar school in the 50’s was very controlling and demanded rebellion. The song is meant to be a rebellion against people who have power over you,who are wrong.’
‘We don’t need no thought control,no dark sarcasm in the classroom.’

COMING NEXT THE BEST 280.

The loveliness of Paris seems somehow sadly gay
The glory that was Rome is of another day
I’ve been terribly alone and forgotten in Manhattan
I’m going home to my city by the bay.

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
281-Anne Shelton-Blues In The Night.
1942-Has never charted, there was no UK chart until 1952.
Best Bit-At 0.11.One of the songs that would make anyone’s list on the ‘Great American Songbook.’
The Great American Songbook is an imaginary list of classic American songs recorded between 1920-1950,you will find several more in this countdown.
Blues In The Night was written by Harold Arlen(see also best songs 634) and Johnny Mercer for the 1941 film ‘Hot Nocturne,’ but after the success of this song the films name was changed to Blues In The Night, when released.
In the film the song is performed by African-American singer William Gillespie in a jailhouse scene.
The song has gone on to be recorded many times over the years,I have chosen Anne Shelton’s 1942 version.Shelton was born Patricia Sibley in 1923,she died in 1994,she is remembered for many performances at military bases during World War 2.In the UK her biggest success occurred in 1956 when she achieved a UK Number 1 single with ‘Lay Down Your Arms.’
‘A man is a two-face,a worrisome thing, who’ll leave you to sing the blues in the night.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
282-Mary Mary-Shackles(Praise You.)
2000-Number 5 single.
Best Bit-At 1.47.So good they named them twice.
Mary Mary are an American gospel duo composed of the sisters Erica and Trecina Atkins-Campbell,they were brought up in a religious family and have been active as a duo since 1998.They took their name from two famous Mary’s from the Bible,Mary mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene one of Jesus’s followers.
Shackles(Praise You) is one of only a handful of songs to become a crossover hit, being popular with gospel.R&B and Pop audiences. It has received criticism in some quarters though from the gospel community who have cited the song as being too modern and not staying true to it’s gospel roots.
The song contains a sample of the Dennis Edwards 1984 hit ‘Don’t Look Any Further’ featuring Siedah Garrett.
‘Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance,I just wanna praise you.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
283-The Pogues and The Dubliners-The Irish Rover
1987-Number 8 single.
Best Bit-At 1.34.The songs narrator appears to embellish the facts, perhaps he has had one or two, many Guinnesses.
The Irish Rover is a traditional Irish Folk song, the authorship is uncertain, but it is attributed to J.M.Crofts.
The song describes an impossibly large twenty-seven masted ship carrying a very colourful crew and various types of cargo in enormous amounts. The seven year voyage ends disastrously when the ship loses its way in the fog, striking a rock and leaving the songs narrator as the only survivor,so there is no one else alive to contradict the tale.
The Dubliners were formed in 1962 in Dublin,in 1967 they charted twice in the UK top 20 with ‘Seven Drunken Nights'(Number 7) and ‘The Black Velvet Band'(Number 15.) The Pogues were formed in London in 1982,they remained together until 1996 and then reformed in 2001-2014,they were fronted by Shane MacGowan.
‘Turned nine times around and the poor old dog was drowned,I’m the last of The Irish Rover.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER
284-The Four Seasons-Big Girls Don’t Cry.
1962-Number 13 single.
Best Bit-At 2.05.In the interest of gender equality 10cc whispered loudly that ‘Big boys also don’t cry.’
The Four Seasons were formed in 1960,the original line-up was Frankie Valli,Bob Gaudio,Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi,it is estimated they have sold somewhere between 100 million to 200 million records.
Like many of their other hits this song was written by the late Bob Crewe and Bod Gaudio(see also best songs 914- 863- 739- 499- 393.) It was inspired by a line in the 1955 Western Movie ‘Tennessee’s Partner,’starring Ronald Reagan.John Payne and Rhonda Fleming. When Payne’s character slaps the blonde played by Fleming,he asks her what she thinks about being slapped, she gets up,composes herself and replies ‘Big girls don’t cry.’Crewe who was half asleep at the time jotted down the line, fell asleep and wrote the song the next day.
‘Told my girl we had to break up,hoped that she would call my bluff, when she said to my surprise, big girls don’t cry.’

THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
285-Pulp-Common People.
1995-Number 2 single.
Best Bit-At 4.38.A lyrical fanfare for the common man.
In 1994 Jarvis Cocker(see also best songs 605) presented some new music he had written to the rest of the band, bass player Steve Mackey started laughing and said,’It sounds like Emerson,Lake and Palmer’s Fanfare For The Common Man,’
That comment reminded Cocker of a girl he had met at St.Martins College in London back in 1988,she was from an affluent background and wanted to know what it would be like to live the life of a poor person.
Cocker told BBC researchers about the Greek girl who inspired the song and they tried to track her down. Cocker said ‘They showed me a picture and it definitely wasn’t her,I dunno, maybe she wasn’t Greek, maybe I misheard her.’
‘She told me that her dad was loaded,I said in that case I’ll have a Rum and Coca-Cola.’

286-Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong-They Can’t Take That Away From Me.
1956-Has never been released as a single in the UK.
Best Bit-At 1.33.When you have the music of George Gershwin, the lyrics of Ira Gershwin and the amazing vocals of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, the hard part isn’t trying to find a 1000 songs to fill this list,it’s having to choose which ones to leave out.
The Gershwin brothers wrote this song for the 1937 film ‘Shall We Dance.’In the film the song is sung by Fred Astaire to Ginger Rogers. In 1949 in their last movie together ‘The Barkleys of Broadway’they performed a dance routine to the song.
Ella Fitzgerald(see also best songs 944 and 702) and Louis Armstrong(see also best songs 767) had recorded with each other in the 1940’s for the Decca Record label. In 1956 they recorded a further three Albums, this time for the Verve label. This song is taken from the first of those recordings,’Ella and Louis,’The other two Albums are ‘Ella and Louis Again’ from 1957 and ‘Porgy and Bess’ also from 1957.
‘The way you wear your hat,the way you sip your tea,the memory of all that,no they can’t take that away from me.’
