THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
283-The Pogues and The Dubliners-The Irish Rover
1987-Number 8 single.
Best Bit-At 1.34.The songs narrator appears to embellish the facts, perhaps he has had one or two, many Guinnesses.
The Irish Rover is a traditional Irish Folk song, the authorship is uncertain, but it is attributed to J.M.Crofts.
The song describes an impossibly large twenty-seven masted ship carrying a very colourful crew and various types of cargo in enormous amounts. The seven year voyage ends disastrously when the ship loses its way in the fog, striking a rock and leaving the songs narrator as the only survivor,so there is no one else alive to contradict the tale.
The Dubliners were formed in 1962 in Dublin,in 1967 they charted twice in the UK top 20 with ‘Seven Drunken Nights'(Number 7) and ‘The Black Velvet Band'(Number 15.) The Pogues were formed in London in 1982,they remained together until 1996 and then reformed in 2001-2014,they were fronted by Shane MacGowan.
‘Turned nine times around and the poor old dog was drowned,I’m the last of The Irish Rover.’
