Best Bit-At 3.21.What a clever thing to do.Use a name(Bobby) that can refer to either sex and double the amount of artists who can record it.
Kris Kristofferson was a struggling singer/songwriter when Fred Foster head of Monument records set him the challenge to write a song about a couple,one who was to be called Bobby McGee who travel around the country and the hook is he turns out to be a she.
The song was first recorded in 1969 by Country singer Roger Miller achieving moderate success on Billboard.
In October of 1970 only a few days before her death Janis Joplin recorded the song for inclusion on her Album ‘Pearl.’
After her death the song was released as a single becoming only the second song to become a posthumous Billboard Number 1 single(see also best songs 712.)
