Bessie Smith (1894-1937) was an American Blues singer nicknamed the ‘Empress of the Blues,’she was the most popular female Blues singer of the 1920’s and 1930’s.She died in 1937 in an automobile accident,her grave was unmarked until a tombstone was erected on August 7th,1970,paid for by the singer Janice Joplin.
‘Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out’ was written during the years of prosperity in the U.S.(The Roaring Twenties.) It was written by Jimmy Cox (1882-1925) in 1923 as a warning about the fickle nature of fortune and how you wont see fair weather friends when the going gets tough.
