Dame Shirley Bassey was born on the 8th January 1937,her father was Nigerian and her mother was English.In 1959 she became the first Welsh person to achieve a UK Number 1 with ‘As I Love You.’
It is told that as a child she sang ‘Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man’ from ‘Showboat’ with such feeling that it made her school teacher uncomfortable.
‘Razzle Dazzle’ was written for the musical ‘Chicago’ in 1975 by John Kander with lyrics by Fred Ebb(see also best songs 469.) In the musical the song is performed by the lawyer Billy Flynn to his client,accused murderess Roxie,explaining how to bamboozle a jury.In the 2002 film version the song is performed by Richard Gere.

In 1968 Elvis Presley(see also best songs 954 and 664) was looking for new material for his 35th studio Album ‘From Elvis In Memphis.’One of the songs chosen and to become the final song on side 2 of the LP was the Mac Davis penned composition In The Ghetto.
Mac Davis is an American Country music singer and songwriter who also provided Presley with his 2002 posthumous UK Number 1 single ‘A Little Less Conversation.’
Other Davis songs worth checking out include ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll(I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life’) and his 1980 UK ‘novelty’ hit ‘It’s Hard To Be Humble.’
In The Ghetto tells a story of poverty,describing a child who can’t overcome his surroundings and turns to crime,which leads to his death and as he is dying another child is being born in the ghetto.

1934-Did not chart in the UK as there was no chart until 1952,but did reach Number 1 on Billboard.
Best Bit-At 2.46.I used to get a little embarrassed playing vinyl with the sound of static coming through the speakers,but I must admit in these days of sterile clear audio I do miss it a bit,(but only a bit.)

De La Soul were formed in high school in 1987 on Long Island,New York,they are Kelvin ‘Posdnous’ Mercer,David ‘Trugoy’ Jolicoeur and Vincent ‘Maseo’ Mason,they achieved initial success when a demo tape was brought to the attention of producer Prince Paul.
Their first three Albums all produced by Prince Paul are considered classics of the Hip-Hop genre.Their early lyrics focused on striving for peace and harmony,this led to them being labelled ‘Hip-Hop Hippies,’an image they tried to shred on their second Album,’De La Soul Is Dead.’
The band are known also for eclectic sampling and this song contains samples from many different sources,including the 1978 Soul song from The Mighty Ryders called Evil Vibrations.The vocals on the song are provided by American R&B singer Vinia Mojica.

In 2009 Australian Funk group Cookin’ on 3 Burners wrote and recorded the original version of This Girl with guest vocals from Kylie Auldist,it didn’t chart anywhere in the world.
Kungs(pronounced Koongs) which is Latvian for ‘Mr’ is the stage name of French music producer Valentin Brunel(born 17th December 1996.) He said ‘It’s a track I produced in my bedroom.I just heard this track on You Tube and I fell in love with it.’
The song tells of a rich guy trying to buy a girls affections with gifts,but he is failing because for her there is nothing more precious than a ‘heart that’s real and a heart that’s true.’
