The song was written in 1964 by 19 year old P.F.Sloan.It was initially offered to The Byrds as a ‘Dylanesque’ potential single,but they rejected it.
Barry McGuire recorded the song in one take late at night.His voice was raspy and tired,but the producer loved it and used that take.The producer Jay Lasker brought the song to Los Angeles radio station KFWB the morning it was finished,where it was played for the first time.
The song became one of the biggest protest songs of the 1960’s as the Vietnam War escalated.The song was not written specifically about the war, but the conflict in Vietnam made it even more relevant.

The Real Thing were brothers Chris and Eddy Amoo,Dave Smith,Ray Lake and Kenny Davis.They formed in 1970,but it wasn’t until 1976 that they found success with the Ken Gold and Michael Denne penned song ‘You To Me Are Everything.’
The same duo wrote the follow up hit ‘Can’t Get By Without You,'(UK Number 2 single.)The Amoo brothers wrote their other top 5 single.’Can You Feel The Force,’Eddy Amoo died in 2018 at the age of 73.
In 1986 You To Me Are Everything was remixed and reached the top 40 again,this time peaking at Number 5.

Sam Moore and Dave Prater (died 1988,) were active as a duo between 1961-1981.
Soul Man was written and produced by Isaac Hayes and David Porter with all the music played by the ‘Stax’ house band Booker T. & the MG’s (see best songs 906.)
Isaac Hayes spoke about the song,’I got the idea from watching on TV the riots in Detroit.It was said that if you put ‘Soul’ on the door of your business establishment,they wouldn’t burn it.Then the word ‘Soul,’it was a galvanising kind of thing for African Americans.’
It is said that The Blues Brothers,’John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd based their characters on Sam & Dave.
