‘It Should Have Been Me’ was written in 1963 by the Motown songwriting employees William ‘Mickey’ Stevenson and making yet another appearance on this countdown,Norman Whitfield(see also best songs 533,569,777 and 911.)
The earliest recording of the song was by Kim Weston in 1963 with backing vocals by the Supremes. In 1968 Gladys Knight and the Pips reached Number 40 on Billboard with their version.Another notable recording is by the Dance artist Adeva who took her version to Number 48 in the UK in 1991.
Yvonne Fair was a member of The Chantels in the 1960’s and was also a singer with the touring James Brown Revue,she recorded the song ‘I Found You’ which was later re-worked into the James Brown signature hit ‘I Got You,(I Feel Good.)
