The 1000 best songs in the world ever.
523-Grandmaster Melle Mel-White Lines(Don’t Don’t Do It.)
1984-Number 7 single.
Best Bit-At 3.23.This is who invented the term ‘Hip-Hop?’
Keith ‘Cowboy’ Wiggins a member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five has been credited with coining the term in 1978 while teasing a friend who had just joined the US Army by scat singing the made up words ‘hip/hop/hip/hop’ in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers.
When originally released on Sugar Hill Records the song was credited to Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel.This was done to mislead the general public into believing that Grandmaster Flash participated on the record, when in fact he played no part and had already left Sugar Hill Records the previous year.
White Lines samples a song called ‘Cavern’ by the band Liquid Liquid, because they hadn’t given their permission Liquid Liquid sued but never received any royalties as Sugar Hill Records were declared bankrupt. The songs lyrics were written by Melle Mel and Sugar Hill Records owner Sylvia Robinson(see best songs 597.)
‘Little Jack Horner sitting on the corner with no shoes or clothes this ain’t funny but he took his money and sniffed it up his nose.’
