527-Barry McGuire-Eve Of Destruction.
1965-Number 3 single.
Best Bit-At 0.34.Unfortunately the words will probably always ring true, yesterday, today and tomorrow.
The song was written in 1964 by 19 year old P.F.Sloan.It was initially offered to The Byrds as a ‘Dylanesque’ potential single, but they rejected it.
Barry McGuire recorded the song in one take late at night. His voice was raspy and tired, but the producer loved it and used that take. The producer Jay Lasker brought the song to Los Angeles radio station KFWB the morning it was finished, where it was played for the first time.
The song became one of the biggest protest songs of the 1960’s as the Vietnam War escalated. The song was not written specifically about the war, but the conflict in Vietnam made it even more relevant.
‘Hate your next door neighbour but don’t forget to say grace.’
