THE 1000 BEST SONGS IN THE WORLD EVER.
553-Freda Payne-Band Of Gold.
1970-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 1.39. It sounds like Motown,it looks like Motown,it smells like Motown,in fact the only thing that’s not Motown is the record label it was recorded on.
This was released on the ‘Invictus’ record label which Brian Holland,Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland formed after they left Motown in 1968.The three of them together with Ron Dunbar wrote the song, members of the Motown house band The Funk Brothers played on the track.
The songs lyrics are open to interpretation, some think it is about an impotent man, while others think it is about a frigid woman.Freda Payne was reluctant at first to record the song, she thought it was about a woman who was a virgin or sexually naive and felt it was more suitable for a teenager.
We kissed after taking vows but that night on our honeymoon we stayed in separate rooms.’
