The song was written by Motown songwriters Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and originally recorded by the Motown group The Undisputed Truth in 1972,that version only peaked at Number 63 on Billboard.Later the same year a near 12 minute version was recorded by The Temptations.Vocal duties were performed by Dennis Edwards,Melvin Franklin and Richard Street who sang a verse each,taking the roles of siblings questioning their mother about their now dead father.
Legend is that Edwards was angered by the songs first verse,’It was the 3rd of September,that day I’ll always remember cause that was the day my daddy died,’as his father was said to have died on that date.It actually was on the 3rd of October,however.
