Best Bit-At 0.9 Newley was an early influence on a young David Bowie who copied his style of singing,which can be clearly heard on many of Bowie’s mid 1960s songs.
As a recording artist Anthony Newley achieved twelve top 40 singles between 1959-1962 including two Number 1s.He was also a very successful songwriter having written Feeling Good made famous by Nina Simone.He also co-wrote the theme song of the 1964 Bond Film Goldfinger with John Barry and with Leslie Bricusse received an Acadamy Award nomination for the film score of Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory in 1971.
‘Why’ was originally recorded by Frankie Avalon,it was written by his manager Bob Marcucci and was the last Billboard Number 1 single of the 1950s,the song also charted at Number 3 in the UK in1972 for Donny Osmond.
