794-Guy Mitchell-Singing The Blues.
1956-Number 1 single.
Best Bit-At 0.13 Not the kind of Blues that Lead Belly,Lightin’ Hopkins,Bessie Smith, etc were known for singing.
The song was written in 1954 by Melvin Endsley who as a three year old in 1937 contracted polio, requiring him to use a wheel chair for the rest of his life.Back in the 1950s it was not unusual for more than one version of the same song be in the chart at the same time.In 1956 Guy Mitchell spent 10 nonconsecutive weeks at Number 1,the sequence being broken by Tommy Steele’s version. In America Mitchell was challenged by a version by Marty Robbins. In the UK the song has also charted for Dave Edmunds in 1980,Daniel O’Donnell in 1994 and Cliff Richard in 2009.
