John Cooper Clarke is an English performance poet who became famous during the Punk Rock era when he became known as the ‘Punk Poet.’He has performed on the same bill with numerous artists including The Sex Pistols,Joy Division and Elvis Costello.Evidently Chickentown is taken from his fourth Album Snap,Crackle and Bop.The song is probably best known
for playing over the end credits in the sixth season episode ‘Stage 5.’ of The Sopranos.
The song bears a resemblance to a poem titled Bloody Orkney attributed to Naval Officer Hamish Blair written during The Second World War.Clarke said he didn’t consciously copy it.’but i must have heard the poem years ago,it’s terrific.’
